Vaccine for Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by a virus spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, mostly found in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. The illness can range from mild symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, to severe disease involving liver damage, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), internal bleeding, and even death.

There is no specific treatment for yellow fever, so prevention is key. This includes protecting yourself from mosquito bites—using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying in places with screens or air conditioning. For many travellers, especially those visiting certain countries in Africa or South America, proof of yellow fever vaccination may be required to enter the country.

The yellow fever vaccine offers long-lasting protection and is typically given as a single dose. However, like all vaccines, it comes with potential risks. While most people tolerate it well, rare but serious side effects can occur, particularly in individuals over 60 or those with certain medical conditions. That’s why your travel pharmacist will assess your itinerary and medical history carefully before recommending the vaccine. If vaccination is not advised due to health reasons, an official exemption certificate may be issued instead.
