Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. It spreads through the saliva of infected animals, usually through bites, scratches, or when saliva gets into an open wound or mucous membrane (like the eyes or mouth). While rare in Canada, rabies is still a risk in many parts of the world—particularly in Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America, and South America—where stray dogs and wildlife are more likely to carry the virus. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, which makes prevention and early treatment extremely important for travellers.

Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis (Prep) is given as two or three doses of vaccine over 1 to 4 weeks. However, Prep does not prevent infection on its own. It merely simplifies treatment if exposure occurs. Specifically, vaccinated individuals do not require rabies immunoglobulin (RIG)—a treatment that is expensive, difficult to access at many destinations, and may require emergency evacuation to a country with advanced healthcare. Even if you’ve been immunized, it is critical to seek medical attention within 24 hours of any bite or scratch from any animal that is strange to you. Our travel pharmacists can help you decide whether the rabies vaccine is appropriate for your itinerary, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors, in rural areas, or around animals.
