Vaccine for Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common viral infections worldwide, and most people will be exposed to it at some point in their lives. While it can be spread through intimate contact, it’s important to understand that HPV is incredibly common and often has no symptoms. In many cases, the body clears the virus on its own. However, certain types of HPV can lead to serious health issues, including genital warts and several types of cancer. One of the most significant concerns today is HPV’s role as a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers (cancers of the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils), which now surpass cervical cancer in some populations.

For Canadian travelers, HPV vaccination offers a safe and effective way to protect against the most harmful strains of the virus. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends the HPV vaccine for individuals aged 9 to 26, but older adults may still benefit based on their health and exposure risk. The vaccine is available in a 1-, 2-, or 3-dose series depending on age and immune status, and provides long-lasting protection against HPV-related cancers and other conditions, as evidenced by a greater than 80% reduction in cervical cancer rates in Europe after the vaccine’s introduction. Getting vaccinated before travelling is a smart preventive step—especially for those going abroad for study, work, or long-term stays—where access to screening and treatment may be limited. As a bonus, this vaccine is publicly funded for BC residents if they start a series before they turn 19 years of age.
