Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) are highly contagious viral diseases that can cause serious health complications. Measles can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling, and death; mumps may cause meningitis and hearing loss; and rubella can result in birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. In Canada, these diseases have been largely eliminated due to high vaccination rates. However, recent outbreaks in Canada and around the world linked to international travel highlight the ongoing risk as more and more parents choose not to immunize their children.
To protect yourself and others, ensure you are up to date with the MMR vaccine before travelling. The Canadian Immunization Guide recommends two doses of MMR before travel for those born in Canada after 1970. People born before 1970 should receive a single dose unless they have laboratory-confirmed evidence of prior infection. Book a consultation with one of our travel pharmacists if you are unsure about your immunization history. Staying informed and vaccinated is key to preventing the spread of these preventable diseases
