Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a highly contagious virus that infects the respiratory tract, leading to symptoms like a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and fever. While many individuals experience mild, cold-like symptoms, RSV can cause severe respiratory illness, especially in infants, young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems. RSV infection is a leading cause of hospitalization in infants and a significant contributor to mortality in patients over 60 years of age. In Canada, RSV infections are most prevalent from late fall to early spring.
For Canadian travellers, particularly those aged 60 and older, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends considering RSV vaccination to reduce the risk of severe infection. Vaccination is especially advised for individuals with underlying health conditions. Preventive measures, such as frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and wearing a well-fitting mask in crowded settings, can further reduce the risk of contracting RSV. Consulting with one of our travel pharmacists can help determine the appropriateness of vaccination based on personal health status and travel plans.
