Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver, causing symptoms like fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). It’s transmitted primarily through consuming contaminated food or water, making travellers to regions with inadequate sanitation particularly susceptible. Countries with higher risks include those in the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal), Africa, the Middle East, parts of the Far East (excluding Japan), Central and South America, and Mexico.

Although highly effective for prevention, the Hepatitis A vaccine is not part of Canada’s normal immunization schedule. It is recommended for individuals travelling to areas where hepatitis A is common.  The vaccine is administered as a two-dose series.  The first dose, given at least 1 week before departure, is usually sufficient for personal protection for one trip. A second dose, given at least six months later, is necessary to confirm long-lasting immunity.
