Traveller’s diarrhea is the most common illness affecting Canadians abroad, especially in destinations with lower sanitation standards, such as parts of Central America, South America, Mexico, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. One of the leading causes is a type of bacteria called enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), which produces a toxin that leads to watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes nausea or fever. Although usually mild, traveller’s diarrhea can disrupt your plans and be more serious for young children, older adults, or those with weakened immune systems.
Our travel pharmacists can help assess your personal risk and travel needs to guide the decision to immunize against ETEC.
