Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can lead to a range of illnesses—from mild respiratory infections to life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections (bacteremia). Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) occurs when the bacteria spread to normally sterile areas of the body and can cause symptoms like high fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, and, in the case of meningitis, neck stiffness and sensitivity to light. These conditions can progress quickly and are particularly dangerous for older adults, young children, and people with certain chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems.

For Canadian travellers, the risk of pneumococcal disease may increase in certain settings, such as during travel to areas with limited access to healthcare, crowded environments, or during extended stays abroad. Vaccination is recommended for anyone over the age of 65, as well as younger individuals with certain chronic health issues or immunocompromising conditions. Our travel pharmacists can help you assess your personal risk and determine if any preventive steps, including vaccination, are appropriate for you.
