Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral illness that was once close to global eradication, but in recent years has reemerged in certain regions due to gaps in vaccination coverage and surveillance. The virus spreads through the fecal-oral route, meaning it is typically contracted by ingesting food or water contaminated with the stool of an infected person. In areas with poor sanitation, the risk of transmission is especially high. Many people infected with polio have no symptoms, but in some cases, the virus can invade the nervous system, causing muscle weakness, paralysis, or even death.

For Canadian travellers, it’s important to ensure polio vaccination is up to date, particularly when visiting countries where the virus is still circulating or where outbreaks have been reported. Routine childhood immunization provides long-term protection, but an adult booster is often recommended for those travelling to higher-risk regions. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and the CDC both advise travellers to consult with a travel health provider to review their vaccination history and assess their need for a booster. Our travel pharmacists can also offer guidance on avoiding potentially contaminated food and water and maintaining proper hygiene—key steps in preventing infection.
